Issues following power outage

Postby LostSoul51 on Wed May 17, 2023 8:40 am

Yesterday, while playing the LSPN Tour, a contractor doing an installation, tripped the circuit breaker, causing the game to crash. Shouldn't be a big problem, right? Unfortunately, now when I try to get back in I get as far as begin play and I get booted out of the game. Not just the course I was playing either.
I have reinstalled Links and no joy. I also did a system restore which also didn't help.
Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a file got corrupted when your game crashed. Now, when you start your game, once the corrupted file loads, you crash. Frequently, it's the .SKY file. If it was me, I'd do the following.

1. The sky files (suffix .SKY) are in the /Program Files x(86)/Links 2003/Skies/ folder. If you don't know what file was being used for the sky, take all SKY files out and put them in a temporary folder - leave 1 file in the Skies folder though, maybe the Sunrise.SKY file or Cloudy,SKY file if you think one of them probably wasn't being used. (If you know what .SKY file it was, just take that one out.)

If you still have the same problem starting the game, put the .SKY files back in the /Skies/ folder. No harm done. However, if the game starts and runs file now, one of your .SKY file has probably been corrupted, and now you have to figure out which one. In the meantime you can still play Links.

I tried the .sky thing and nothing changed. Tried system restore, but that didn't work either, so undid that. I can play other tourneys from other sites, just not LSPN. Could there be a problem with the launch code in the "begin play" area? I have one other thing to try but not very optimistic. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.

There is some kind of a patch for the LSPN server. Run that. Don't know where it is though - sorry!

It is a safe path, you see that message because HTTPS is used now, and the patch was made available when it was just HTTP . Click the > on the right , then click allow download.

DLed the server file (and the crash fix just because). Still get thrown out of the game after clicking begin play. What else could it be? (I'm running an upgraded PC with Intel drivers which has caused other problems with the game but it was still playable.)

Can you elaborate on this?

I also play on the ConnLinks site, but that may be irrelevant since it is offline play.

I know this sounds redundant but please verify your links version by following these 3 steps.
1. Start Links
2. Click on Options
3. Click on About

Did that and its correct. Reinstalled 1.07 from Country Club anyway just to be safe. Also checked my firewall settings and made sure Links was allowed through. I'm running out of options. I've been playing this game for 25 years and hate the idea that I may be restricted to only one site.

What does your event viewer show you after a links crash?

I get no notice after being booted out. I click the final "begin play" and screen goes black and I'm out.

So just to make sure i'm understanding this correctly. You can play practice rounds, links career mode rounds, rounds from your handicap league which i assume is e-mail tourney no problem but when you try to play on the links tour you get a black screen correct?

I can play the hadcp/email round. I can also access the standings board for all of the LSPN tourneys. I get all the way thru the tour site for a given course to the final "begin play". That is when I get dumped. Something wrong with the link-up apparently.
